Lady Gaga and Apple face criticism for allegedly using AI in ‘MAYHEM Requiem’ promotion visual

The design has drawn widespread attention due to its highly polished and stylised appearance

A promotional visual shared by Apple Music for Lady Gaga’s upcoming concert film MAYHEM Requiem has sparked debate online after users suggested it may have been generated using artificial intelligence.

The image, which depicts Lady Gaga’s face formed as a burning wax candle, was released ahead of the concert film’s exclusive streaming debut on Apple Music.

While neither Lady Gaga nor Apple have confirmed the use of AI in its creation, the design has drawn widespread attention due to its highly polished and stylised appearance.

Observers online have pointed to visual traits they associate with AI-generated imagery, including soft focus, artificial lighting effects and an unusually smooth finish. Some users also suggested it could be a CGI-rendered artwork rather than traditional photography or illustration.

The discussion has reignited broader concerns around the increasing use of AI in creative industries, particularly in promotional material linked to major artists and technology companies.

Lady Gaga has previously been linked to similar speculation, including claims that a music video directed by Tim Burton featured AI-generated elements, although those claims were not confirmed.

Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some users criticising the perceived use of AI in promoting a high-profile pop artist.

However, others noted that public attitudes towards AI-generated content appear to be shifting rapidly. One commenter said, “Crazy how ai is recalibrating consumer taste levels in real time. Five years ago I would’ve thought this was so cool but now it immediately looks like cheap shit”.

The controversy highlights growing scrutiny over how AI is used in entertainment marketing, as audiences become increasingly aware of its visual characteristics and implications for creative authenticity.
