HEC Announces National Skill Competency Test for IT Graduates

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has officially notified the commencement of the National Skill Competency Test for IT graduates. This landmark initiative aims to align academic outcomes with the fast-changing global technology sector.

HEC developed this standardised assessment under the Prime Minister’s directives. They worked in close collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication (MoITT), the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA). The goal is clear. They want to enhance the market readiness of Pakistan’s growing IT workforce.

Student Benefits & Incentives: Who Should Apply?

This transformative opportunity targets specific students. You are eligible if you are currently enrolled in your 7th or 8th semester of a computing program. This includes fields like Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science.

Participation is entirely free of charge.

Students have strong reasons to register. High-achieving candidates will receive a joint certificate from HEC, PSEB, and P@SHA. Additionally, you will gain inclusion in a national talent pool. Both local and international employers can access this pool.

Furthermore, qualifying students secure one academic credit from their respective institutions. You also gain prioritised access to internships, apprenticeships, and international certification pathways.

University Rankings at Stake

The significance of this test extends to the universities themselves. HEC has mandated Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to ensure full student participation. The results will directly influence national benchmarking.

HEC will categorise universities into performance tiers based on their students’ success. This reflects how well the institution aligns with industry competencies. Conversely, institutions face strict penalties for non-compliance. Universities must facilitate registration or nominate a focal person before the February 6, 2026, deadline. Failure to do so will result in placement below the lowest performance category in national rankings.

Key Dates by HEC

Time is short. Eligible candidates must contact the focal person at their university immediately to complete registration.

  • Registration Deadline: February 6, 2026
  • Test Dates: April 4-5, 2026

The test will be computer-based and conducted simultaneously across Pakistan.
