The Punjab government has approved the addition of 1,500 electric buses to extend affordable and eco-friendly public transport across all tehsils of the province, with new routes already announced in Bahawalpur. The decision, endorsed by the Punjab Cabinet on January 23, 2026, signals a major expansion of the province’s green transport initiative under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

This latest move aims to take modern public transport beyond major cities and into smaller districts and tehsil headquarters. According to officials, the government will procure 1,000 new electric buses in the next phase, while the total fleet will gradually reach 1,500 buses as deliveries continue.

All buses will operate through a cashless payment system, making travel easier, faster, and more transparent for commuters. Authorities say the project reflects Punjab’s broader vision of inclusive mobility and reduced carbon emissions.

The electric bus service is already operational in cities like Lahore and Rawalpindi, while Jhelum received 15 buses in December 2025. Pakpattan has also been added to the network, and Bahawalpur is set to benefit from newly announced routes.

Officials expect around 1,100 electric buses to be fully operational by early 2026, with the remaining 400 to 500 buses arriving by April or May 2026, completing the planned fleet.

Fares remain fixed at Rs20 per ride, while students, senior citizens, and differently-abled passengers continue to travel free of cost. District administrations have been directed to complete standardized bus stops across tehsils to ensure smooth operations.

A senior transport official stated, “This initiative is not just about transport; it’s about cleaner cities, affordable mobility, and equal access for every citizen of Punjab.”
