Olivia Rodrigo hosts for the first time, debuts new song from upcoming album as musical guest

Olivia Rodrigo returned to Studio 8H to host Saturday Night Live for the first time as the long-running programme approaches the final episodes of its 51st season.

Rodrigo, previously a musical guest twice, took on double duty, a challenge former cast member John Milhiser said depends on timing and star power.

“If you’re a big enough star and personality, of course, you can do double duty. It’s rare, and it’s about the moment. Olivia is having her moment. Let her cook,” he said.

The episode opened with a political sketch featuring a portrayal of Pete Hegseth, alongside a guest appearance by Aziz Ansari as FBI Director Kash Patel. The segment referenced recent political tensions in Washington, leaning into topical satire.

In her monologue, Rodrigo reflected on her early career, including acting roles and her rise in music, while performing a comedic sequel to her hit “Drivers License”. Milhiser commented, “For a young artist, she brings a remarkable blend of self-assuredness, vulnerability, and musical reverence.”

Recurring sketches included television parodies, musical segments, and character-driven comedy. A highlight featured Rodrigo performing in a surreal bedroom setting inhabited by alien observers, while another sketch relied on exaggerated product marketing humour.

Rodrigo performed her single “drop dead”, introduced by Deborah Harry, and later debuted a new song titled “begged”.

Milhiser noted his enthusiasm, saying, “I can’t stop listening to the new single ‘drop dead’. Can’t wait for the album and her upcoming tour.” Rodrigo’s third studio album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love comes out June 12.

“Weekend Update” addressed current affairs, including US politics and entertainment industry disputes, balancing heavier topics with comedic commentary.

Next week’s Saturday Night Live episode, scheduled for May 9, will feature Matt Damon as host for his third time, with musical guest Noah Kahan making his second appearance.
