Six beauty creams banned in Pakistan over toxic substances

Authorities have banned six popular skincare products in Pakistan after tests revealed the presence of toxic substances, including mercury and arsenic, raising serious health concerns.
The action was taken by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority following routine inspections that found multiple violations of national safety standards. The findings were confirmed in a written response by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi.
Among the affected products are Golden Pearl Beauty Cream, Parley 24K Gold Beauty Cream, Goree Beauty Cream, and Face Fresh Beauty Cream, which failed to meet the requirements of Pakistan Standard Specification 3228:2025.
Laboratory testing conducted by the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research confirmed chemical hazards and microbiological contamination in the products.
Experts warn that mercury, often used in skin-lightening creams, can cause skin irritation and long-term damage, while arsenic poses serious health risks even in small amounts, including potential kidney and neurological complications.
Following the findings, authorities have halted the sale and distribution of the affected creams and launched continued market surveillance to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
The development has raised concerns among consumers about the safety of widely used beauty products and the need for stricter quality control.
