World Day for Glaciers and International Day of Forests are being observed globally today, drawing attention to two of the planet’s most critical natural systems under increasing threat.

World Day for Glaciers highlights the urgent need to protect glaciers, which serve as vital freshwater sources for billions of people. Scientists warn that glaciers are melting at an accelerating pace due to climate change, raising concerns over water security, rising sea levels and the increased risk of natural disasters such as floods and landslides.

The observance underscores the importance of immediate global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adopt sustainable environmental practices to slow glacier loss.

Meanwhile, International Day of Forests is being marked under the theme “Mobilising political will”, emphasising the need for stronger government commitment to protect and restore forests.
