‘Scream’ franchise hits $1b, joins elite horror club

Los Angeles  –  The Scream franchise has officially entered the billion-dollar club, with its latest installment, Scream 7, pushing the series past $1 billion at the global box office. The seventh entry in the long-running horror saga earned nearly $100 million worldwide in its opening weekend, cementing the series’ status as one of cinema’s most lucrative horror properties.

Over the past three decades, the Scream films have collectively grossed $1,009,618,099, with Wes Craven’s original still holding the top spot for a single film at $173 million. Scream 7 came close to that milestone with $166.5 million in 2023, but Scream 7 is expected to shatter previous records as it continues its run in theatres.

This milestone places Scream in an elite group of horror franchises that have surpassed $1 billion, alongside The Conjuring Universe, Alien, Resident Evil, IT, and Saw. The Conjuring Universe remains the top-grossing horror series of all time with nearly $2.9 billion across nine films.

Other horror franchises, including Final Destination, Predator, A Quiet Place, Paranormal Activity, and Halloween, are still chasing the billion-dollar milestone. Industry insiders say Scream’s latest success demonstrates the enduring appeal of Sidney Prescott and Ghostface, whose legacy continues to captivate both longtime fans and new viewers alike.

As Scream 7 continues its theatrical run, analysts predict the film will break further franchise records, potentially setting a new benchmark for horror sequels and reaffirming the franchise’s status as a cultural and financial powerhouse.
