Russell Brand suspected of attacking at least 10 more women, report claims

Police chief Sir Mark Rowley warns that many more potential victims could come forward following Brand’s conviction

Russell Brand is suspected of having attacked at least 10 women, according to a report by The Guardian, as police prepare for further allegations following his conviction for rape and sexual assault.

The Metropolitan Police team is expected to begin reviewing reports about potential victims next week. The newspaper reports that 10 is regarded as a minimum figure by sources, although some information is second-hand and other women may be reluctant to approach the criminal justice system.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has warned that further women may come forward. Speaking to LBC Radio, he confirmed that detectives were investigating rape allegations made by two women and said he would not be surprised if many more people contacted police.

The two cases remain under investigation. Detectives have sent files to specialist prosecutors at the Crown Prosecution Service and are discussing the material with them. No further charges have been announced.

Brand, 51, was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court on November 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women. The offences took place between 2004 and 2009. He was acquitted of two rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.

He is due to be sentenced on Monday, November 9, and remains in custody after being refused bail. He faces a significant custodial sentence.

The case has prompted discussion about the treatment of complainants in rape trials. The government will consider proposals from Victims’ Commissioner Claire Waxman concerning judicial directions on rape myths and misconceptions.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said victims should never feel they were on trial. The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed that there is no typical response to sexual assault and delayed reporting does not prevent prosecution.

Police have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
