Japanese volleyball player Yuji Nishida has drawn widespread attention after a dramatic apology following an accidental incident during a weekend all-star event in Kobe, western Japan.

The 26-year-old Osaka Bluteon captain was taking part in a half-time serving challenge when his left-handed serve veered off course and struck a female courtside judge on her back. Nishida appeared visibly shocked as the judge, who was not injured, paused to regain her composure.

Moments later, spectators watched as Nishida launched himself headfirst along the court in an exaggerated sliding apology, his hands by his side and his face close to the floor.

The gesture prompted laughter and applause from the crowd and fellow players as he slid rapidly towards the official.

Nishida then dropped to his knees and continued bowing repeatedly, at one point pressing his palms together. As he stood and bowed again, the judge responded with a polite bow of her own, smiling as the exchange concluded.

Clips of the apology have since been viewed millions of times online. Television commentators joked about whether the friction had burned his head, with one comparing his appearance to a “freshly landed tuna”.

Despite the viral distraction, Nishida delivered a strong performance on the court and helped guide his team to a 3-0 victory.

Observers noted that while apologies are deeply embedded in Japanese culture, Nishida’s display was unusually theatrical. The most formal version, known as dogeza, involves prostrating oneself so the forehead touches the ground, a gesture now rarely seen in public life.
