Tesco says fashion sales rose in festive season

Tesco, like all the key UK supermarkets, has major fashion operations and while it doesn’t always share much information about them, on Thursday it did say that fashion sales rose in the latest period.

In an update covering Q3 (the 13 weeks to 22 November) and Christmas (the six weeks to 3 January), it said group sales rose 3.1% and 2.4%, respectively.

It outperformed the UK market on both a value and volume basis.

And in Home & Clothing, like-for-like sales were up 2.1% for the Christmas period. In fact, in Clothing alone, its like-for-like sales rose 4.4% with fashion continuing its outperformance compared to the weaker home operations.

That was just about all the detail it shared with the rest of the report focusing on its food offer. But there’s no denying that as it strengthens its number one position in UK grocery sales, it means ever more customers will be considering its fashion offer too.

Overall, the UK market for supermarket fashion is buoyant with Sainsbury’s also seeing growth in this area and Asda even seeing strong growth for its George offer while it grocery ops continue to struggle.

Back in October, Tesco reported its latest half-year results and its CEO specifically called out the recent launch of its F&F fashion offer online as a key part of its success.

Tesco had been putting big support behind the line with a TV ad campaign and a wider range of products now available to more customers.
