Infinity Ward Teases The Next COD: The Definitive Modern Warfare

Infinity Ward is preparing to reveal the next Call of Duty game. Yesterday, the developer teased fans about the highly anticipated 2026 release. Co-heads Mark Grigsby and Jack O’Hara shared exciting news during the second episode of the ‘COD POD: Off Duty‘ podcast. They explicitly called their next project “the definitive Modern Warfare”. Consequently, fans should expect a major step forward for the franchise.

The Definitive Modern Warfare: Focus on Precision & Current-Gen Power

Infinity Ward posted a letter on social media to highlight its goals. The studio intends to deliver an experience driven by precision and attention to detail. Recently, Infinity Ward has played a supporting role. They assisted with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, and ongoing Warzone development, including the 2022 release of Warzone 2.0. Now, they are taking the lead once again.

However, this new title leaves older hardware behind. Earlier this month, Activision confirmed the upcoming entry will skip the PS4 and Xbox One entirely. Therefore, players must purchase a PS5 or an Xbox Series X/S console. Alternatively, they will need access to a high-end gaming PC.

Market Challenges & Imminent Reveals

This hardware requirement creates a potential obstacle. A severe DRAM shortage crisis is currently disrupting the market. As a result, the prices of current-gen consoles and essential PC components have drastically increased. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how this hardware barrier will affect the game’s overall sales.

Despite these market challenges, a full reveal is imminent. Infinity Ward has several upcoming opportunities to showcase the title. PlayStation still holds a sizable Call of Duty audience, so the June 2 State of Play broadcast remains a possibility. Additionally, the developers could reveal the game during the main Summer Game Fest showcase on June 5.

However, the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 7, serves as the most likely venue. Microsoft plans to feature titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved, Fable, and Beast of Reincarnation. The next Call of Duty project would fit perfectly into this heavyweight lineup. Regardless of the chosen event, fans must mark the first few days of June on their calendars.
