Shakira headlines free Copacabana beach concert with 2 million in attendance

Shakira performed a selection of her well-known songs on a large stage on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Shakira performed to an estimated two million fans on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, delivering a large-scale concert under a full moon as part of her ongoing tour.

The Colombian singer took to the stage shortly after 11 pm, wearing Brazil’s national colours, with drones forming a she-wolf image above the crowd, referencing her nickname.

Addressing the audience in Portuguese, she said, “Brazil, I love you! It’s magical to think that here we are, millions of souls together, ready to sing, dance, be moved and remind the world what really matters.”

Rio city officials confirmed the scale of attendance, with mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stating, “Two million people. The she-wolf made history in Rio.”

The event adds to a series of major concerts held on the beach in recent years, including performances by Madonna and Lady Gaga.

Shakira performed a selection of her well-known songs, including “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Bicicleta,” “La Tortura” and “Estoy Aqui,” on a large stage set up near the Copacabana Palace hotel.

The show featured 10 costume changes and included appearances from Brazilian artists Anitta, Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania.

Fans travelled from across Brazil to attend, with some arriving early and camping overnight. One attendee told AFP, “I’m very inspired by her, she’s a Latin woman at the top.” Another fan said, “She loves Brazil so much and the love she has for us is the love we have for her.”

Authorities deployed around 8,000 security personnel, alongside drones and screening checkpoints, to manage the large crowd.

Officials also estimated the concert could contribute more than $160 million to the local economy, with tourism figures showing a significant rise in airline bookings compared to the previous year.
