Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, marking a major step toward developing a modern public transport network in Gujranwala.

The approval was granted during a high-level meeting where officials presented detailed plans aimed at improving urban mobility and easing traffic congestion across the city.

Authorities have been directed to ensure full connectivity by linking all areas of Gujranwala to the metro train system through feeder bus services, a move expected to streamline commuting and reduce pressure on roads.

Under the proposed plan, a 17 to 19-kilometre of the track will run underground, with two dedicated tunnel sections designed to improve traffic flow and minimize disruption at the surface level.

The span approximately 31.5 kilometres, connecting Gakhar to Eminabad. It will feature 24 stations, including two underground stations, and is expected to be completed within 12 months.

As part of sustainability measures, solar power systems will be installed at all stations and depots. Key depot locations include Garjakh, Chand Da Qila, and Gondlanwala. Additionally, a 62-kilometre drainage system will be constructed along both sides of the route to support broader urban infrastructure.

The project will also include a modern command and control center to ensure efficient operations, monitoring, and passenger safety.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the project would transform the city’s transport system and provide residents with travel facilities aligned with international standards, describing it as a major development initiative for the people of Gujranwala
