Jaafar Jackson recreates iconic Michael Jackson popcorn meme to mark biopic’s success

The moment mirrors the widely circulated meme of Michael Jackson from his 1983 ‘Thriller’ short film

Jaafar Jackson has recreated one of Michael Jackson’s most recognisable internet memes to celebrate the strong audience response to the new biopic Michael.

The actor, who portrays his late uncle in the film, appeared in a promotional clip shared on X wearing the signature red-and-black Thriller jacket while eating popcorn and smiling.

The moment mirrors the widely circulated meme of Michael Jackson from his 1983 “Thriller” short film, where he is seen watching a movie in a cinema.

The recreation was released as the film achieved a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a “Verified Hot” rating. In contrast, the biopic has received a more limited critical response, holding a 38% score from reviewers.

Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, follows the life and career of the singer, focusing on his early years through to 1988.

The project has also generated attention for its box office performance, with expectations that it could surpass the $60 million opening record set by Straight Outta Compton for a music biopic.

Reports suggest that a sequel may be considered if the film reaches significant global earnings.

Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of Michael Jackson, leads the cast, which also includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long and Miles Teller.

The film is currently showing in cinemas, with audience reactions continuing to shape its overall reception.
