The second episode of Euphoria Season 3, titled “America My Dream” examines ambition, money and revenge as characters navigate an increasingly ruthless version of Los Angeles.

Drawing a contrast with earlier generational ideals, the episode opens with Maddy asserting her worldview during a job pitch, “I know my generation is entitled, but I don’t believe anybody owes me anything. I’m not a victim, I won’t be an HR nightmare, and I believe in capitalism.” 

Creator Sam Levinson appears to frame modern Los Angeles as a contemporary Wild West, reinforced through Rue’s narration referencing migration during the pandemic and characters seeking opportunity at any cost. The episode leans heavily into this metaphor, though its delivery is notably direct.

Financial motivation drives multiple storylines. Cassie pursues online fame through OnlyFans, while Nate attempts to secure investment for his elder care venture despite mounting debt. Jules, having left art school, lives as a sugar baby, prioritising independence over formal education.

Maddy’s storyline offers a more grounded perspective. Struggling professionally, she continues supporting her mother financially, highlighting both her belief in capitalism and awareness of systemic limitations.

Rue’s arc remains darker. Now working at a strip club, she gains financial stability but continues battling addiction and isolation. Flashbacks confirm her relapse and estrangement from her family, complicating her apparent progress.

Themes of exploitation and control intensify through the ongoing conflict between Alamo and Laurie. “Rue belongs to us,” one character declares, emphasising the lack of agency experienced by several characters.

Episode 3, titled “The Ballad of Paladin,” which features Nate and Cassie’s wedding, is scheduled to release on Sunday, April 26 at 9 pm ET/PT on HBO and Max.
