Public and goods transport fares in Rawalpindi have been officially reduced following a significant drop in fuel prices, providing relief to commuters and the business community.

According to transport authorities, the revision comes after the federal government announced a reduction in petrol prices by 3.13 percent (Rs. 11.83 per litre) and diesel prices by 25.91 percent (Rs. 134.81 per litre).

Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary Syed Asad Shirazi confirmed that a new fare structure has been implemented from Saturday on the directives of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema.

He said the decision was taken after consultations with the Passenger Transport Union and the Goods Transport Association to ensure smooth enforcement across the transport sector.

Under the revised structure, fares for diesel-powered passenger vehicles, including both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned transport, have been reduced by 15 percent. Petrol-run public service vehicles will see a 5 percent reduction in fares, while goods transport charges have been cut by 26 percent.

Transport officials said the move is aimed at passing on the benefit of lower fuel costs directly to the public.

Meanwhile, traders welcomed the reduction in goods transport fares, saying it could help ease the prices of essential commodities in the coming days. However, some residents noted that while fare increases are usually implemented quickly after fuel hikes, reductions often take longer to reflect in the market.
