Canadian men’s hockey players’ reaction to stuffed toy after Olympic defeat against USA goes viral

Team Canada’s men’s hockey players showed visible frustration after being presented with plush mascots following their overtime defeat to the United States in the Winter Olympic gold medal game.

Team USA secured a 2-1 victory on Sunday, claiming their first Olympic gold in 46 years. After more than 60 minutes of intense, physical hockey, the match was settled in overtime, with Jack Hughes delivering the decisive moment that confirmed the result.

For Canada, the loss meant settling for silver despite a performance many believed was capable of delivering gold. Players received their silver medals individually before Olympic organisers returned to present an additional commemorative gift: a stuffed toy.

The plush figures included Tina the Stoat, one of the official mascots of the Games, and a small character known as Flo, described as an “impish” figure. Reports indicated that every medallist across all events received the same keepsake.

Television footage showed several Canadian players accepting the toys with restrained expressions. Forward Nathan MacKinnon appeared unimpressed during the ceremony, reflecting the subdued mood within the squad.

The presentation quickly drew attention online, with clips of the players’ reactions circulating widely on social media.

Some user questioned whether a soft toy was an appropriate addition to the medal ceremony for elite athletes moments after a high-stakes defeat, while others laughed at the players’ reactions.

While Olympic mascots traditionally form part of Games branding and memorabilia, the timing of the gesture prompted debate. For Canada’s players, the silver medal itself was likely reminder enough of a narrow and painful loss on one of sport’s biggest stages.
