Jason Momoa reportedly exits Sony’s ‘Helldivers’ film as studio searches for new lead

Despite the casting change, the adaptation remains in active development and is set to be released in November 2027

Jason Momoa has reportedly departed Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ upcoming film adaptation of Helldivers, according to a report from Deadline.

Sources told the publication that the actor is no longer attached to the project, which is being directed by Justin Lin. The reason for Momoa’s departure has not been disclosed.

Despite the casting change, the adaptation remains in active development. Deadline reported that Sony is now searching for a new lead actor to headline the film, which is currently scheduled for release on November 10, 2027.

Plot details for the project remain under wraps. The film is based on the popular Helldivers video game franchise developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, which first launched in 2015.

The original game is a cooperative twin-stick shooter that places players in the role of elite soldiers known as Helldivers. Working together, players defend “Super Earth” against hostile alien forces in a large-scale intergalactic conflict.

The franchise expanded significantly with the release of Helldivers 2. The sequel sold more than 12 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC during its first four months following its 2024 launch. The game has since expanded to Xbox and continues to attract players.

The film adaptation is being produced by Hutch Parker alongside PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash and Justin Lin through his production company, Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Helldivers is part of Sony’s broader effort to bring successful PlayStation properties to film and television audiences.

Previous adaptations include Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, which generated $407 million worldwide, as well as the television series Twisted Metal and HBO’s acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us.

Momoa’s exit marks a significant change for the project, but Sony appears committed to moving forward as development continues ahead of its planned 2027 release.
