Energy Minister Unveils Transformer‑Based Load Shedding Mechanism
Energy Minister Awais Leghari announced a new mechanism shifting load management from feeder level to transformer level, directly linking outages with consumer payment compliance.
Leghari confirmed that transformers serving non‑paying consumers will face targeted load shedding, ensuring accountability at the smallest operational unit within distribution networks.
The federal minister stated that technical preparations will be completed within one year, after which the transformer‑based load shedding policy will be formally implemented.
Leghari highlighted that even his constituency experiences prolonged outages, with five feeders facing up to 18 hours of daily load shedding.
The minister clarified that 11,500 feeders currently operate without load shedding, but financial losses increase if outages are not applied where bills remain unpaid.
He directed the Power Division to enforce compliance with grid codes and coordinate with ISMO to ensure least‑cost dispatch aligned with merit order.
