American actor Donald Gibb, best known for his roles in the cult films Revenge of the Nerds and Bloodsport, has died aged 71, according to TMZ.

Gibb’s son, Travis, confirmed to the outlet that the actor died on Tuesday at his home in Texas following health complications.

The New York City-born actor became widely recognised for portraying Ogre, the intimidating but dim-witted fraternity member in the 1984 comedy Revenge of the Nerds. He later reprised the role in the sequels Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise and Revenge of the Nerds IV: Nerds in Love.

In Bloodsport, Gibb starred alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme as Ray Jackson, an American martial artist who contrasted with Van Damme’s more composed lead character, Frank Dux. He returned for the 1996 follow-up.

His later film appearances included roles in Hancock, The Biggest Fan and Grind. On television, he appeared in series including The X-Files, Seinfeld, The A-Team and Magnum: P.I..

Gibb also provided voice work for video games including Mafia II, Rage and Alter Echo.

Born in August 1954, Gibb began his screen career with a small role in Any Which Way You Can starring Clint Eastwood.
