The MTV VMAs 2026 delivered plenty of moments for television, but social media offered viewers a closer look at what happened backstage and during commercial breaks.

Phones captured conversations, celebrations, last-minute preparations and celebrity encounters that were not shown during the broadcast from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.

One of the most notable moments involved Taylor Swift and Madonna, who were the two most-nominated artists of the night.

The pair were spotted talking during a commercial break, although what they discussed was not revealed.

The emotional moments continued when Sienna Spiro was seen crying after receiving the Best New Artist award, with social-media footage showing the celebration away from the televised acceptance speech.

One clip also offered a glimpse of Swift congratulating Spiro as she passed by with Dakota Johnson in tow. 

BLACKPINK’s Lisa also offered fans a glimpse behind her performance. Before taking the stage, she gathered with her dancers for a prayer. Following the performance, the group celebrated backstage.

Other informal moments showed Charli XCX and Troye Sivan making a TikTok together, while Shaboozey was seen spending time with French Montana.

Raye also provided a relatable backstage moment when she removed her heels after walking the red carpet, choosing comfort before her performance.

Meanwhile, Off Campus star Ella Bright was filmed having a fan moment after hugging Swift.

Together, the backstage footage provided a different view of the MTV VMAs 2026, revealing interactions and preparations that the carefully produced television broadcast did not capture.
