Mike Myers’ ‘unsettling’ original ‘Cat in the Hat’ costume heads to auction in Los Angeles

Bids for the costume from the 2003 live-action adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic will start at $6,000

Mike Myers’ original Cat in the Hat costume from the 2003 live-action film is set to go under the hammer, giving collectors an opportunity to own a screen-worn piece of the Dr. Seuss adaptation.

The costume has reportedly been listed by Propstore for its Los Angeles Summer 2026 auction on August 26.

Bidding will start at $6,000, while the auction house expects the costume to reach a five-figure sale price.

The original ensemble includes the full-body furry suit, the Cat’s distinctive red-and-white striped top hat, red bow tie and additional accessories worn by Myers during production.

Images released by Propstore show the costume up close, revealing details that were less noticeable on screen.

The static mask, worn fur and facial features have prompted reactions from fans, with some viewing the costume as more unsettling than nostalgic.

Released in 2003, The Cat in the Hat starred Myers alongside Dakota Fanning, Spencer Breslin, Kelly Preston, Alec Baldwin and Sean Hayes.

Directed by Bo Welch, the film received largely negative reviews at the time but later developed a cult following, particularly for Myers’ unconventional performance and the film’s surreal humour.

The film’s reception also affected the future of live-action adaptations of Dr. Seuss’ books.

Audrey Geisel, the author’s widow, was a major critic of the movie, and the Seuss estate subsequently prohibited further live-action adaptations of his works.

The auction will offer collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of the film’s most recognisable production costumes more than two decades after its release.
