FIFA investigates alleged racist abuse involving IShowSpeed during World Cup match

‘The Fifa World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect’, FIFA said, in a statement condemning the abuse

FIFA has launched an investigation into allegations of racist abuse involving American content creator IShowSpeed during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde at the FIFA Club World Cup.

According to reports, football’s world governing body confirmed it had been made aware of an incident that allegedly took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3 during the last-32 fixture and had “immediately initiated an investigation”.

IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr, has been live streaming matches throughout the tournament.

The 21-year-old, who has more than 100 million followers across YouTube and TikTok, appeared in footage on his YouTube channel wearing a Cape Verde shirt during a confrontation with an Argentina supporter in the stands.

In a statement, FIFA said, “The Fifa World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect.”

The governing body added, “It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”

IShowSpeed has become a prominent figure at the tournament through his live broadcasts, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic featuring in some of his streams.

The reported incident comes shortly after another alleged case of racism connected to the tournament. France forward Kylian Mbappe recently criticised Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she posted remarks on X mocking his background and education following Paraguay’s defeat to France in the last 16.

The French Football Federation has since announced plans to pursue criminal charges, describing Amarilla’s comments as “utterly abhorrent and unacceptable”.
