Pakistani Researcher Develops Low-Cost System to Turn Sewage into Drinking Water

A Pakistani researcher based at an Italian university has developed a low cost solar plasma water treatment system capable of converting sewage water into drinking water without the use of chemicals.

The system was tested at the NED University of Engineering & Technology in Karachi.

Dr Mubashir Saleem, who is affiliated with a university in Italy, travelled to Pakistan to carry out the project. He said the technology relies on plasma generated through high voltage electricity, which eliminates harmful bacteria, chemicals and other contaminants present in the water.

According to Dr Mubashir, the system can also be powered through solar panels and wind energy, which brings electricity costs down to nearly zero. He said the technology can be installed at different scales, ranging from household use to large industrial applications.

The system does not require any additional chemical treatment, making it a cost effective option for regions facing clean water shortages.
