How much could estate earn?

Starring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, the film has been produced with an initial budget of $150 million

The forthcoming biopic Michael could generate significant earnings for the estate of Michael Jackson, as industry projections suggest strong global box office potential, according to Forbes.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, the film has been produced with an initial budget of $150 million.

Additional reshoots, funded by the estate, are estimated to have cost more than $25 million, with some reports placing the figure closer to $50 million.

The production was adjusted to focus on the late 1980s, following legal constraints linked to past settlement agreements.

To reach profitability, the film is expected to exceed $500 million at the global box office, a milestone achieved by few music biopics.

Distributors are reportedly targeting more than $700 million, including revenue from streaming and other platforms, with a sequel dependent on strong performance.

As a co-investor, Jackson’s estate stands to benefit significantly. In addition to an estimated $10 million earned upfront through production involvement and music licensing, a projected 25% share of profits could yield more than $40 million if the film meets optimistic forecasts.

This would add to the estate’s long-standing commercial success, which has generated over $3.5 billion since the singer’s death in 2009.

Analysts point to the wider financial impact of music biopics, citing Bohemian Rhapsody as a benchmark after it grossed more than $900 million globally.

Beyond ticket sales, such films can boost catalogue streams, stage productions, and related ventures. The Jackson estate already earns substantial annual revenue from these channels, estimated at $105 million in 2025 alone.

Experts note that international markets and younger audiences will be key factors in determining the film’s long-term financial impact and cultural reach.
