Apple’s Next Flagship Laptop Could Arrive as ‘MacBook Ultra’ With These Changes
Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup is already fresh after its recent upgrade. The 14-inch and 16-inch models now use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, released last month. However, even bigger changes are now being discussed for the next generation.
According to the reports, Apple is planning a major redesign for its high-end MacBook Pro models. This change could arrive by early 2027.
He also noted that Apple may introduce a new name, “MacBook Ultra,” for these premium machines. If that happens, this model would sit above the MacBook Pro lineup with a higher price tag.
A Major Redesign Expected Around 2027
The upcoming MacBook Ultra is expected to mark a big shift in Apple’s laptop design language. Reports suggest that Apple delayed the timeline due to a global memory chip shortage. As a result, early 2027 now looks more likely than late 2026.
This would also be the first major redesign since 2021. Back then, Apple launched the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip is not expected to receive all major upgrades.
OLED Display Upgrade
One of the biggest changes will likely be the display technology. Apple is expected to move from mini-LED to OLED panels.
Current MacBook Pro models still use LCD screens with mini-LED backlighting. OLED would improve contrast, brightness, and color accuracy. It also delivers true blacks and richer visuals.
Apple already uses OLED across most of its devices. iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad Pro models all feature OLED screens today.
Touch Support Comes to Mac
The MacBook Ultra may also introduce touch-screen support. Users could interact using both touch and a trackpad or keyboard.
This would be a major shift for Mac laptops. Steve Jobs once criticized touch screens on laptops due to arm strain. However, Apple’s approach has changed over time. If launched, this feature would bring Macs closer to hybrid devices.
Dynamic Island on MacBooks
Apple is also rumored to replace the notch design. Instead, a hole-punch camera could be introduced. This would enable a dynamic island-style interface on MacBooks. It would show alerts and system updates near the camera area.
For example, battery warnings and AirPods status could appear there. This would also help Apple create a more edge-to-edge display design.
M6 Pro and M6 Max Performance Chips
The MacBook Ultra is expected to use M6 Pro and M6 Max chips. These chips will likely be built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process. This would deliver stronger performance and better efficiency gains. It also marks a major step forward in chip manufacturing.
In comparison, the current M5 Pro and M5 Max use TSMC’s 3nm process. That means the M6 generation could offer a noticeable performance jump.
Thinner and Lighter Design
Apple is also expected to make the MacBook Ultra thinner. The switch to OLED panels may help reduce internal thickness. Other internal design changes could also contribute to a slimmer build. However, there is no clear indication that ports will be removed.
Features like HDMI, MagSafe, and SD card slots may stay intact. Apple had removed some ports in the past, which faced criticism.
Possible Cellular Connectivity
Future MacBook Ultra models may also support built-in cellular connectivity. Currently, Macs rely on iPhone or iPad hotspot features.
Apple has reportedly explored adding native 5G support. This could use the C1X or future C2 modem chips. If implemented, users could access LTE or 5G without a phone connection.
Model Lineup and Expectations
Apple’s entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip is expected to stay closer to current designs.
It may not include many of the rumored premium upgrades.
Meanwhile, the MacBook Ultra would target high-end users. It is expected to be the most advanced MacBook Apple has ever made. With OLED screens, new chips, and possible touch support, the device could redefine Apple’s laptop lineup.
