Punjab govt declares buffer zones as mandatory to control industrial pollution
LAHORE – Taking an important step to prevent industrial pollution across the province, the Punjab Environment Department has issued an order to establish environmental buffer zones around all industrial areas. Under the official orders issued by DG EPA Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, it has been made mandatory to create green buffer zones around industrial estates and zones so that the effects of smoke and harmful gases emitted from factories can be reduced. This initiative has been taken under the Environmental Protection Act 1997, which aims to ensure the protection of public health by controlling industrial pollution. According to the Department of Environment, industrial pollution has become a serious threat to human health, which is why strict action will be taken against those who violate environmental laws.
Authorities have made it clear that action will be taken against institutions that do not plant trees in industrial areas, while a complete ban has been imposed on cutting trees without permission.
Action will also be taken against elements occupying or damaging green belts, while institutions that do not meet the planting targets will be held accountable.
The EPA has directed the relevant authorities to go to the field and ensure strict implementation of the orders, while the GIS Department has been entrusted with the responsibility of mapping for effective monitoring of industrial areas.
According to officials, this step will not only bring environmental improvement but also help establish a balance between industrial development and public health.
