Sony Pictures has confirmed that the video game Bloodborne is being adapted into an R-rated animated feature.

 The announcement was made during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon, where executives outlined plans to remain faithful to the tone of the original game.

Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, said the adaptation would stay aligned with the source material’s violent and gothic elements. “Very true” to the gory spirit of “Bloodborne,” he told attendees, referencing the game’s distinctive atmosphere and themes.

Originally developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bloodborne follows a traveller navigating a dark, gothic city inhabited by nightmarish creatures. The title has built a strong following since its release, contributing to its status as a notable property within Sony’s portfolio.

The film will be co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation and Seán McLoughlin, widely known as JackSepticEye. McLoughlin has developed a large online audience, with millions of followers tracking his gameplay experiences, including his extensive engagement with Bloodborne.

The project forms part of Sony’s broader strategy to expand video game properties into film. Recent developments include an adaptation of Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa, as well as a completed film version of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda, directed by Wes Ball.

Video game adaptations have become an increasingly significant segment of the film industry. Recent releases such as A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have achieved strong box office performance, highlighting the commercial potential of the genre.

Lyrical Media, the parent company of Lyrical Animation, will co-finance the Bloodborne adaptation alongside Sony Pictures. Further details, including casting and release dates, have yet to be announced.
