Alpha Delta Phi fraternity hazing video goes viral after police find 56 blindfolded pledges

Police responding to a fire alarm at the University of Iowa uncovered fraternity pledges shirtless in a basement

Police responding to a fire alarm at the University of Iowa uncovered 56 blindfolded fraternity pledges standing shirtless in a basement, prompting a viral video and a four-year suspension for Alpha Delta Phi.

In the early hours of November 15, 2024, Iowa City and University of Iowa police attended the Alpha Delta Phi house after a fire alarm was triggered. Instead of a routine incident, officers discovered 56 pledges in the basement, blindfolded, silent and covered in what reports described as “various substances”, later clarified as food that had been thrown on them.

Bodycam footage of the scene has since attracted millions of views online. The clip shows officers questioning the group, who remained still and did not respond. The silence and optics of the situation intensified public reaction on social media.

Hazing is prohibited by the University of Iowa and classified as a misdemeanour under Iowa law. Within 24 hours of the incident, the university placed Alpha Delta Phi on interim suspension. By May 2025, the fraternity was formally suspended for four academic years, through at least July 1, 2029.

According to reports, 21-year-old Joseph Gaya, described as a former fraternity member who was not enrolled at the university at the time, was arrested in connection with the incident. Charges against him were later dropped.

There has been no indication from available reports that the pledges were physically restrained. However, the visual impact of 56 blindfolded individuals standing silently in a dark basement drew widespread criticism and fuelled online speculation.
