Police Seize Mini-Truck Carrying Thousands of Kites, Suppliers Held
Police have seized a mini-truck loaded with thousands of kites and strings and arrested a supplier during an operation aimed at enforcing the ban on kite selling and flying in Rawalpindi.
According to police, the vehicle was intercepted while transporting around 20,000 kites and 100 rolls of kite strings into the city. The consignment was allegedly meant for distribution across different areas, despite a complete ban imposed by the government.
A police spokesman said the Airport police acted on intelligence about the movement of a large stock of kites into the garrison city. The vehicle was stopped, the items were confiscated, and a case was registered against the supplier.
Authorities said the seized material was worth millions of rupees and could have fueled widespread illegal kite flying during the season. Kite flying remains strictly prohibited in Rawalpindi, unlike Lahore where limited permission has been granted on specific days and locations.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Potohar Sardar Babar Mumtaz Khan said kite flying had been declared a non-bailable offence, adding that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in what he described as a dangerous activity that puts lives at risk.
In a separate operation, Chaklala police arrested five more suppliers and recovered over 900 kites and three rolls of string, including 600 kites found in the possession of one individual.
Meanwhile, the City Traffic Police is also assisting district police by using Safe City surveillance cameras to help enforce the ban. Motorcyclists have been advised to install safety wires to protect themselves from deadly kite strings.
