Paul Mescal teases his role as Paul McCartney in upcoming Beatles movies
“I feel emotionally attached to him. He received me with great kindness and warmth,” Mescal recalled meeting McCartney
Paul Mescal is offering new insight into his highly anticipated role as Paul McCartney in The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, revealing how deeply the project has already influenced him both personally and creatively.
The actor, who will portray the legendary musician in one of director Sam Mendes’ four interconnected Beatles films, says stepping into McCartney’s shoes has sparked a new relationship with music.
Speaking about the role, Mescal confirmed that he will be doing his own singing in the films, an experience he says has been transformative. “I’ve learned so much. It’s really inspired a love,” Mescal said. “I’ve always loved music, but getting to play one of the great songwriters and great frontmen has really lit a fire in terms of personally writing music and engaging and hearing music in a different way.”
Mescal also shared how meaningful it has been to meet McCartney himself while preparing for the role, describing the encounter as both humbling and emotional. “He’s the most brilliant man,” Mescal said. “I feel emotionally attached to him. He received me with great kindness and warmth.”
The actor emphasized the scope of the ambitious project, which will tell the Beatles’ story across four separate films, each focusing on a different band member. Mescal noted that the emotional complexity of the group is what excites him most.
“They had the most fascinating lives,” he said, adding that “the interpersonal politics between them all, the love and the frustration, it’s such rich territory.”
Mescal also reflected on how the long-term nature of the Beatles project has brought a sense of stability to his fast-moving career. He explained that working on something of this scale has allowed him to settle in one place and focus deeply on the craft. “I’m so thrilled to be working on something at this scale, but also rooted in performance with Sam and great writers,” he said.
Set for release in April 2028, The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event marks a major new chapter for Mescal, blending his dramatic strengths with music and live performance. With his own vocals featured and direct guidance from McCartney himself, Mescal’s portrayal is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched performances of the upcoming film slate.
