BoA parts ways with SM Entertainment after 25 years as contract expires without renewal

The agency confirmed that, after discussions, both parties mutually agreed to conclude BoA’s exclusive contract

BoA has officially ended her long-standing partnership with SM Entertainment, concluding a 25-year relationship that helped shape the modern K-pop industry.

On January 12, SM Entertainment confirmed that, following extensive discussions, both parties mutually agreed to conclude BoA’s exclusive contract as of December 31, 2025. The decision brings to a close one of the longest artist–agency collaborations in K-pop history.

BoA debuted under SM Entertainment in 2000 at the age of 13 and went on to achieve significant success in South Korea, Japan and across Asia. In its statement, SM described her as “an icon of overseas expansion who pioneered the Korean Wave across Asia” and “the Star of Asia,” noting her influence as a role model for generations of K-pop artists.

“BoA’s path as a pioneer and trailblazer was made brilliant by her relentless effort and passion,” the company said. “It was a true honor for us to walk alongside her remarkable steps. For 25 years, BoA was undeniably SM’s pride, strength, and symbol.”

SM Entertainment also expressed support for BoA’s future endeavours, stating that it would continue to cheer on both the artist BoA and Kwon BoA as an individual, while wishing her genuine happiness in the next chapter of her life.

To mark the milestone, the agency released a tribute video across BoA’s official channels. The video traces her journey from childhood to the present day and is set to her song “Only One,” underscoring the reflective tone of the announcement.

BoA shared her own message on Instagram, writing, “As much as we gave and received without holding back, I leave without regret. Thank you for the time we shared. I will continue to support the ever-shining SM Entertainment. Thank you.”
