Anya Taylor-Joy responds to unusual ‘Today’ show question comparing Joni Mitchell and Princess Peach

The actress discussed her role in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, where she reprises her portrayal of Princess Peach

Anya Taylor-Joy has drawn attention online following an unusual exchange during a televised interview while promoting her latest film appearance.

The actress appeared on the Today show to discuss her role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where she reprises her portrayal of Princess Peach. During the segment, host Craig Melvin referenced reports that Taylor-Joy may portray Joni Mitchell in a forthcoming biographical film before posing an unexpected comparison between the two figures.

“You’re rumored to be playing Joni Mitchell … one of the, arguably, most singularly important women in music over the last generation or so. Princess Peach, one of the most iconic women in gaming history. What’s the connection there?” Melvin asked.

Taylor-Joy paused before responding, “What’s the connection between Joni and Princess Peach?” After the question was repeated, she answered, “How they’re both singular; you can’t touch them.”

She added, “They’re in a league of their own.”

The exchange quickly circulated online, with clips attracting millions of views across social media platforms. Reactions were mixed, with some users questioning the nature of the question, while others praised the actress for her composed response.

One comment read, “In defense, this is a question that has never been asked to anyone before.” Another stated, “Not even 9 in the morning and he’s asking her some bulls—t.” Others commended Taylor-Joy, with one writing, “Honestly props to Anya for pulling that one out of the fire.”

The appearance comes as Taylor-Joy continues promotional activity for the animated sequel, following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie released in 2023.

Reports have also indicated that she may be cast as a younger version of Joni Mitchell in a forthcoming biographical project directed by Cameron Crowe, with Meryl Streep expected to portray the older musician.
