Google Maps Gets Biggest Update in Over a Decade with AI and Immersive Navigation

Google Maps is receiving its largest update in more than 10 years, introducing a new AI-powered “Ask Maps” feature and an advanced Immersive Navigation system to make travel planning and navigation more interactive.

Ask Maps AI Feature

The new “Ask Maps” tool is powered by Gemini AI and allows users to ask complex questions using natural language. Instead of searching with simple keywords, users can ask detailed queries such as finding quiet cafés to charge a phoneor public tennis courts with lights at night.

The AI can also help plan road trips by suggesting stops along the route. For example, travelers visiting destinations like the Grand Canyon or Horseshoe Bend can receive recommended stops, travel times, and directions based on community tips and user reviews.

Google said the system will personalize suggestions using activity signals such as saved locations, previous searches, and dining preferences.

Currently, the feature is rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices, with desktop support expected soon.

Immersive Navigation Experience

Google has also redesigned the navigation interface with 3D route visualization. The immersive navigation feature shows buildings, terrain, overpasses, and road structures in a more detailed view.

Drivers will also see key road elements such as lanes, crosswalks, stop signs, and traffic lights, helping them better understand their surroundings while driving.

Improved Voice Guidance and Route Insights

The app’s voice navigation has been upgraded to provide more natural and descriptive instructions. Instead of simple commands, the system may explain directions such as passing one exit before taking the next highway ramp.

Maps will also show route comparisons, highlighting benefits like less traffic or faster toll routes.

Destination Preview and Parking Guidance

Before starting a trip, users can preview their destination using Street View images and receive parking suggestions nearby.

As drivers approach their destination, the app will highlight building entrances, parking areas, and the correct side of the street.

According to Miriam Daniel, Vice President of Google Maps, the redesigned system aims to reduce uncertainty during travel by providing clearer visuals, smarter navigation guidance, and real-time information.

The immersive navigation feature is beginning to roll out in the United States, with expansion planned for Android, iOS, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in.
