‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘Marshals’ kill off original character in off-screen debut twist

The new series led by Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton confirms the death with a few details in its opening episode

Marshals has confirmed the death of a key Yellowstone character in its opening episode, with Monica Dutton written out of the spin-off in an off-screen development that offers limited explanation.

The new series, led by Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, establishes early on that Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille in Yellowstone, has died prior to the events of the show. While her absence had been noted ahead of the premiere, episode one provides only vague suggestions about the cause of her death.

The episode opens with Kayce reliving a combat scenario involving his former Navy SEAL unit. In the sequence, he answers a ringing phone with the words, “Monica, where are you?” before an explosion cuts the scene short. He later wakes alone, confirming her absence.

Subsequent scenes show Kayce and his son Tate referring to Monica in the past tense and discussing how much she “suffered.” At a demonstration on the Broken Rock Reservation, Tate holds a photograph of his mother as protesters raise concerns about contamination from a nearby government mine. The site is said to have polluted a river running through the reservation, with several residents reportedly developing cancer. The episode implies that Monica may have been among them, though no direct confirmation is provided.

The premiere concludes with Kayce visiting Monica’s grave on the East Camp property. After deciding to join the US Marshals, he tells her he is “changing paths” and seeking a “new beginning.” A final scene shows him aiming at a wolf before the screen cuts to black.

Marshals, originally titled Y: Marshals, replaces Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan with Spencer Hudnut as showrunner. The decision to resolve Monica’s storyline off-screen is likely to prompt discussion among viewers as the spin-off continues.
