Harry Styles debuts unreleased song written for Liam Payne on second anniversary of his death

Harry Styles paid an emotional tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne by performing an unreleased song written for him during his Madison Square Garden concert on October 16, marking the second anniversary of Payne’s death.

The singer introduced the song, titled “What Is Enough?”, during his sold-out show in New York, telling the audience that he had written it for his friend around two years earlier. The performance marked the first time Styles had publicly performed the track, giving fans an unexpected tribute to the late singer.

“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” Styles told the crowd, reflecting on the people who had helped shape his life and career.

“There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends,” he continued, before asking the audience for permission to perform the song he had written for Payne.

Styles also offered a message about grief and supporting the people around you, telling concertgoers, “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other.” The singer then performed the previously unheard track, accompanying himself on guitar.

During the performance, Styles sang the poignant lyric, “You dance until you’re tired,” in a moment that resonated with fans who had gathered to celebrate his music while remembering Payne. Footage of the tribute subsequently circulated on social media, with One Direction fans sharing their reactions to the emotional performance.

Payne died on October 16, 2024, aged 31, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His death shocked fans around the world and prompted tributes from his former One Direction bandmates, who had shared the stage with him during the group’s rise to international fame.

Styles previously reflected on the loss during a March 2026 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, discussing the difficulty of grieving while feeling that the public had a stake in his personal loss.

“I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of own part of your grief in a way,” Styles said. He also explained that he had come to believe that living life fully was one way to honour friends who had died.

Styles and Payne rose to fame together after competing on The X Factor in 2010, where they were grouped with Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik to form One Direction. The band went on to become one of the most successful pop acts of its generation, releasing five studio albums before going on hiatus in 2016.

Although the members subsequently pursued solo careers, their shared history has remained an important part of their connection with fans. Payne’s death has also prompted renewed reflection on the group’s legacy and the friendships formed during their years together.

The tribute took place during Styles’ 30-show residency at Madison Square Garden, part of his Together, Together global tour, which supports his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., released in March 2026. The New York residency is scheduled to conclude on October 31.

By choosing the anniversary of Payne’s death to perform a song he had written for his former bandmate, Styles offered fans a rare glimpse into his personal grief. The performance served as a reminder of the bond they shared and the lasting impact Payne continues to have on the people who knew him and the millions who grew up listening to One Direction.
