Gracie Abrams has spoken candidly about being labelled a “nepo baby”, saying she understands the public discussion surrounding her background and acknowledges the advantages she had while building her music career.

Speaking on New York Times’ Popcast, the singer reflected on growing up as the daughter of filmmaker JJ Abrams and producer Katie McGrath ahead of the release of her third album, Daughter From Hell, on July 17.

Addressing the ongoing debate about celebrity children benefiting from family connections, Abrams said, “The nepo stuff is obviously in the discourse appropriately.”

She continued, “I think about the privilege there, and it’s like, I had a safety net, and that allowed me the ability to experiment and to concentrate and I had the gift of time to dedicate to doing this thing I loved. I wasn’t growing up afraid financially, and that’s the biggest deal.”

Abrams also explained that the advantages extended beyond financial security, noting that being raised by parents working in the entertainment industry gave her valuable insight into creative careers.

“The specific household that I was born into, there is just this vocabulary that I’m so lucky to grow up with,” she said. “So like, when I see people pointing that out, it’s like, I get it, hard-core. The jokes and things, I understand the tone of the Internet.”

Abrams also discussed the inspiration behind the title of Daughter From Hell and reflected on her teenage years during the interview.

The singer previously addressed similar criticism in a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, where she said she had deliberately kept her parents separate from decisions relating to her career while recognising that audiences could understand how her background might be perceived from the outside.
