Federal Govt to Fund 100MW Solar Project in Gilgit-Baltistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has confirmed the federal government will fully fund a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan, directing authorities to accelerate its completion.
The announcement came during a high-level review meeting chaired by PM in Islamabad, where officials briefed participants on the current scope and implementation progress of the project.
PM Shehbaz also directed that an independent third-party validation be carried out at every stage to ensure full transparency throughout the execution of the 100MW project.
Officials also informed the meeting that an 18MW solarisation initiative for government buildings was currently under implementation across the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
The 18MW project for government buildings in Gilgit and Diamer divisions is scheduled for completion by December, while the Baltistan division component is expected to be finished by October.
Work is also underway on a separate 82MW solar energy project targeting residential areas in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas, and Khaplo, officials told the meeting.
The 100MW project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council in August 2025 to provide uninterrupted, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply to the region.
PM Shehbaz formally approved the project in December 2025, underscoring the commitment of the government to address long-standing energy shortfalls in Gilgit-Baltistan.
