NUST Karachi Students Develop Bio-Inspired Underwater Snake Robot


Students at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Karachi Campus have developed a Bio-Inspired Underwater Snake Robot, drawing inspiration from the movement of yellow-bellied sea snakes (Hydrophis platurus), which are considered among the fastest-swimming sea snakes in the world.

The innovative project was developed by students Hamza Imdad, Qazi Khizar Ali, and Hamza Hassan under the supervision of Dr. Khurram Kamal at NUST’s Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC). The achievement marks a significant milestone in underwater robotics research and development in Pakistan.

According to the university, the research team successfully carried out the world’s first Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of sea snakes and combined the findings with advanced motion modeling, buoyancy balancing, and structural simulations to design the robotic system.

The underwater robot mimics the efficient swimming patterns of sea snakes, enabling improved maneuverability and propulsion in aquatic environments. Such technology has potential applications in underwater exploration, environmental monitoring, marine research, and defense-related operations.

The development highlights the growing focus on robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced engineering research within Pakistan’s higher education sector.

The research team plans to further enhance the robot by incorporating greater autonomy, intelligent navigation capabilities, and real-world deployment features, paving the way for more sophisticated underwater robotic systems in the future.

The project also reflects NUST’s expanding contribution to global innovation in robotics and emerging technologies.
