Filming for the upcoming Tomb Raider television series has been temporarily halted after Sophie Turner sustained a minor injury during production.

The Amazon Prime Video adaptation, which stars Turner as Lara Croft, paused filming to allow the actor time to recover. The series also features Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie and Bill Paterson. An Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson told Page Six, “We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” with reports suggesting Turner could return to set within two weeks.

Crew members are expected to continue being paid during the pause as preparations remain in place for filming to resume. The development comes shortly after the studio released a first look at Turner in the lead role.

Sources indicated the injury may be linked to the physically demanding nature of the role. Turner is understood to have a pre-existing back condition that worsened during production, which began in January. One insider said, “Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the ­grueling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far.”

Earlier this year, Turner spoke about the intensive training required for the role, revealing she had been undertaking eight-hour sessions, five days a week, for several months. She said, “We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week, since February last year of training, so it’s been a lot.” She also reflected on the challenges of building strength for the role, adding, “Which I never had. So it has taken me months and months and months to get into good shape. That’s what I’ve learned.”

The series follows the story of Lara Croft, an archaeologist-adventurer, and marks the latest live-action portrayal of the character. Turner becomes the third actor to take on the role, following Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in previous film adaptations.
