ABC could face losses amounting to tens of millions of dollars if it is unable to air its latest season of “The Bachelorette”, following a sudden schedule withdrawal linked to controversy surrounding its lead.

The network halted the programme after the release of a 2023 video showing Taylor Frankie Paul throwing chairs at her estranged partner Dakota Mortensen, with one incident involving her child. The decision came despite earlier indications that the broadcast would proceed as planned.

Industry sources suggest that the financial implications could be significant, including licensing fees paid to Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, marketing expenditure and lost advertising revenue. As the show is produced externally, the studio is expected to retain its licence fee regardless of whether the series is broadcast.

The abrupt removal has also created complications for international distribution. Warner Bros. had arranged global sales, including agreements with Canada’s Citytv, although the programme was later replaced in line with ABC’s decision.

According to insiders, Warner Bros. executives were informed of the situation at the same time as ABC and have since adopted a cautious approach while maintaining communication with the network. Concerns had reportedly been raised during casting due to Paul’s past, which had been publicly documented.

“We’re collateral damage, to be honest,” one source said, reflecting on the broader impact across production partners.

The current season had been positioned as a relaunch for the long-running franchise, which last aired in 2024 and had undergone leadership changes following workplace concerns. The situation may now prompt further adjustments to the format and scheduling.

Despite the disruption, industry observers do not expect lasting damage to the franchise. Some anticipate that the season may still be released at a later date, potentially on streaming platforms or within a revised broadcast window.
