Romania records tourist arrivals down 7.3pc and overnight stays down 8.5pc in January
BUCHAREST – Arrivals and overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation, including apartments and rooms for rent decreased by 7.3% and by 8.5%, respectively, in January 2026 compared to January 2025, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data sent to AGERPRES on Thursday. In January 2026, the arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) amounted to 785,800 persons, of which Romanian tourists accounted for 81.6% and foreign tourists 18.4%. In January 2026, the overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception (including apartments and rooms for rent) totalled 1.486 million, down 8.5% compared with January 2025. Romanian tourists’ overnight stays were 78.2% of the total overnight stays, while the foreign tourists’ overnight stays were 21.8%. In January 2026, the average duration of stay was 1.8 days for Romanian tourists and 2.2 days for foreign tourists. ‘In January 2026, the net use index of accommodation places was 20.4% on total tourists’ accommodation structures (including apartments and rooms for rent), decreasing by 2.4 percentage points compared to January 2025,’ the INS mentioned. By county, the number of tourists’ arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in January 2026 recorded higher values in: Bucharest (124,000 people), Brasov (122,100 people) and Prahova.
(49,900 people), while overnight stays in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) were highest in: the Capital (264,500), Brasov (237,400) and Prahova (98,100). By country, the largest numbers of foreign tourists staying in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation (including apartments and rooms for rent) in January 2026 came from: Italy (17,300 people), the Republic of Moldova (11,300 people) and Israel (11,000 people). ‘The arrival of a tourist in an establishment of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation is registered when a person signs in the register of the respective establishment for one night or several nights’ accommodation. In each establishment of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation, regardless of the number of overnight stays, the continuous stay of a tourist counts as one arrival. The overnight stay means the 24-hours interval, starting with the admission hour of the respective establishment, for which a person signs in the register of the establishment and benefits of accommodation according to the price paid, even if the actual stay lasts less than the mentioned interval,’ according to the INS release.
